Departing Dargaville 9am, travelling down the earliest accessible road which linked the Northern Wairoa River to Ripiro Beach. Commentary about the Gum diggers, they may have long gone, but the caves some lived in and the holes they dug kauri gum from are a trademark they have left behind. You will hear about the succulent Toheroa (Shellfish Delicacy) living in fresh water streams. Remnants of ancient native Forests appear as Lignite Seams in the cliffs. Shipwreck relics, Sand dunes, Freshwater Lakes and Quicksand, the magnificent Kaipara Bar visible from the Kaipara Lighthouse, an amazing array of birdlife including the rare New Zealand Dotterel. Beach combing / Sand Tobogganing (not for the faint hearted,) netting or surfcasting.

Lunch at Pouto Point, returning to Dargaville via Kelley’s Bay, visit a large Rotary cowshed, travel through the old Saw milling towns of Te Kopuru and Aratapu, passing Kumara fields arriving back in Dargaville at 4 pm.
